The Catholic Lens

As a Catholic school it’s of paramount importance to ensure that in class curricular experience speaks to and nurtures students as mature and active students who can utilize their academic strengths to serve the greater good.

The Catholic Graduate Expectations are a road map to the global competencies that many educational stakeholders are striving to achieve. Global Competencies, similar to the Catholic Graduate Expectations, speaks to the transferable skills students need to build and sustain in order to be actively engaged within a global learning and economic context.

As outlined by the Ontario Ministry of Education, these global competencies are:

  • Critical Thinking and Problem Solving
  • Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship
  • Self-Directed Learning
  • Collaboration
  • Communication
  • Citizenship

Specifically, the Catholic Graduate Expectations which were developed in 1998 are incredibly foreword thinking for their time and continue to be a benchmark for Catholic education across Ontario. In regards to Chaminade’s S.T.E.A.M program, the collective effort is to ensure that Chaminade students grow not only within the framework of Global Competencies but importantly as learners enriched by the Catholic lens.

Such an example of this learning begins in Gr. 9, S.T.E.A.M, where students work with industry partners (such as Pilot PMR) and academics to grow in their understanding of a professional digital footprint and the viability of social media applications as a new resume.

As participants in a S.T.E.A.M specific New Resume Portfolio Camp (Winner of the 2017-2018 TCDSB Innovative Practice for 21st Century Learning), students leverage multi-modal digital tools to build and sustain a reflective learning portfolio and social media presence that both celebrates student learning and enriched personal voice. As such, students are encouraged to be responsible citizens “in person and online,” who can use technology as an enabler of effective communication in order to share and celebrate key aspects of their learning and participate in education that fits within a global context.

The following video highlights students reflecting on their New Resume Portfolio Camp experience.
